STUDIO HOUSE

This project is a response to a complex brief to provide an Art Studio ,display an Art collection, provide multigenerational living ,a home office ,garaging and a self-contained apartment.

The clients, a Senior Lecturer of Art and a Sculptor/Builder, recognised that a rebuild would be the way to meet their future requirements, and to stay in the neighbourhood.

By setting the entrance back from the street a large northern landscape element has been given to the street and created a scented vine covered sun trap.

The house is a precisely planned combination of two storey elements around courtyards, offering light, gardens and long view lines resulting in a wonderful feeling of space.

Solar heating, double glazing, shutters and water recycling minimise running costs.

The clients designed and manufactured the moving screens on the northern upper veranda and the beautiful brass cabinets in the kitchen and living room. Moveable walls and screens have been employed to great effect throughout the house.

The home’s simple material mix of concrete floors, timber ceilings and steel, is the perfect complement to the eclectic richly detailed collections and objects filling this individual home.
