HIGHTON

The spectacular views and the extreme slope of the site inspired the hang-glider approach to this house. At night the lights of Geelong are the spread out below giving the occupant a sense of floating.

The low-key street front opens up to a strong axis linking informal and formal living areas, protected and flying deck spaces. The skew plan of the rear room brings the orientation around to due north which allows the butterfly roof to be perfectly angled for solar collectors.

The lower level accommodates another living space opening to the garden, two bedrooms, small kitchen, bathroom and laundry.

The philosophy was that of using materials and construction systems usually used in beach houses; a less formal and therefore less expensive approach.
